…and that was over 45 years ago…
Where did that time go? It is hard to believe that I have been actively painting for that long. This painting was done in 1971, when I was in undergraduate school, studying for my BFA at the University of Cincinnati.
I remember that time well. As painting majors, we worked in an abandoned and pretty much condemned house just at the edge of campus. There were holes in the floor that you had to step around. There were 10 of us sharing the studio house. Our instructor was Mr. Allen. In the attic of the house, he found an old Nancy Drew mystery, and we would all gather around at the start of the day, and he would read us a chapter. I don’t know what this had to do with painting, but it was a fun and mindless way to take us out of the real world and into our imaginations. Thinking about that now, I guess that is what he was trying to do, and it worked.
The painting above is called “Abiogenesis” and the literal meaning of that is the creation of life from matter (such as rocks create spiders and there are always spiders with the rocks so that must be how they are created!) Anyway, look it up! This landscape is giving birth to almost 20 animals hidden within the rocks. Some are nearly covered but others quite apparent. Hmmm…maybe there is correlation from this painting to my trees?
So enjoy the hunt, and when you find one or more, please leave a note in the comment section! It will be fun! from 1971!
